Masa'il Harb al-Kirmani: Book of Purification (Taharah) and Prayer (Salah) - Edited by al-Surayyi'
Volume 1 · Page 206Chapter: The Changing of the Qibla

Translation · EN

531 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, he said: Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Lahiq ibn Humayd, that he witnessed Ibn 'Umar combine the two of them at Jam' (Muzdalifah) together, with a single iqamah—meaning: Maghrib and 'Isha'.

Chapter: The Changing of the Qiblah

  • Harb said: Ishaq dictated to us, saying: "The first time prayer was made obligatory in Makkah, it was two rak'ahs by two rak'ahs, except for Maghrib which was three. They prayed this way in Makkah for ten years, then they arrived in Madinah and prayed in the same manner for sixteen (1) months; all of this was towards Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Prayer remained in Makkah and at the beginning of his arrival in Madinah, where he migrated with his companions, for a total of sixteen months; all of it was towards Bayt al-Maqdis. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked up to the sky, as he loved for the qiblah to be changed towards the Ka'bah. Then Allah—the Exalted—revealed: {We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased}. So he was turned towards the Ka'bah, and they had not been accustomed to praying towards the Ka'bah. Thus, it is from here that the Jews spoke; He said: {The foolish among the people will say, 'What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they used to face?'}"

Notes

(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct reading is: "sittata 'ashar" (sixteen).
