546 - Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us, he said: 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Jald ibn Ayyub, from Abu Iyas Mu'awiyah ibn Qurrah, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: "Menstruation is three days, five days, or ten days; whatever exceeds that is istihaḍah." 'Abd al-Rahman said: "Malik used to consider menstruation as fifteen [days]."

Chapter: A woman who experiences istihaḍah as soon as she first menstruates

• I asked Ahmad ibn Hanbal, I said: A woman whose blood flows continuously as soon as she first menstruates? He said: "She should pray for twenty-four or twenty-three [days] and abstain for six or seven [days]," relying on the hadith of Hamnah bint Jahsh; the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil.

• And I asked 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah, I said to him: [Regarding her who] experiences continuous blood flow as soon as she first menstruates? He said: "She should abstain for the duration her [female] relatives abstain."

547 - Ishaq narrated to us, he said: Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi narrated to us, he said: Zuhayr ibn Muhammad al-'Anbari narrated to us, from 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil ibn Abi Talib, from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah, from his uncle 'Imran ibn Talhah, from his mother Hamnah bint Jahsh, who said: I used to have frequent and severe menstruation, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have frequent and severe menstruation, so what do you think about it? It has prevented me from prayer and fasting. He said: "I suggest that you use a cotton pad (kursuf); for it absorbs the blood." She said: It is more than that. He said: "Then use a cloth bandage (talajjami)." She said: It is more than that. He said: "Then wear a garment." She said: It is more than that, for it is gushing forth. He said: "I will instruct you with two options; whichever you perform will suffice you instead of the other. If you are able to perform both, then you know best. It is merely a kick from the kicks of Satan, so menstruate for six or seven days in the knowledge of Allah, then perform ghusl. When you see that you have become pure and cleansed, pray for twenty-four or twenty-three nights and days, and pray and fast, for that will suffice you. And do so every month as other women menstruate and become pure, according to the appointed time of their menstruation and purity. If you are strong enough to delay the Zhuhr prayer and hasten the 'Asr prayer, and perform ghusl, then pray Zhuhr and 'Asr together, and delay the Maghrib prayer and hasten the 'Isha' prayer, then perform ghusl and combine the two prayers, then do so. And perform ghusl with the Fajr and pray the Fajr, then do so, and fast and pray." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "And this is the more pleasing of the two options to me."
