As for those among the Tabi'un and those after them, such as al-Awza'i and Sufyan, who said that she should sit [for a period equivalent to] the menstrual cycles of her female relatives, they have followed in this the sunnah-based schools of thought and the matters that are most analogous. [This remains the case] until months and times of menses pass upon her; if she then becomes regular, she shall not exceed her [regular] time thereafter, and she shall abandon the emulation of her female relatives' times, due to what has become clear of her physical constitution.
554 - Imran ibn Yazid narrated to us, saying: Isma'il ibn Abd Allah narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i was asked about a young girl whose blood begins to flow at her first menses until blood pours forth. He said: 'She should look to the custom of women; for among them are those who remain [in a state of menses] for five, six, or seven [days]; so [she should follow] the consensus of women.' He said: 'Then she should wait after the seven [days] for a day or two, then perform ghusl and pray.'
555 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Muthanna ibn al-Sabbah, that he heard 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah saying—regarding a virgin who suffers from irregular bleeding and does not know her cycles: 'She should look to the number of the cycles of her female relatives; her mothers, or her maternal aunts, or her paternal aunts, then she is, after that, a mustahada (suffering from irregular bleeding).'
556 - Al-Walid said: I mentioned this to al-Awza'i, and he recognized it and said: 'This is the practice according to us.' I said to al-Awza'i: 'What if she does not know the cycles of her female relatives?' He said: 'Then she should remain [in her period] for the maximum of women's cycles, [which is] seven days, then perform ghusl and pray as a woman suffering from irregular bleeding does.'
Al-Walid said: And I heard al-Awza'i say: 'If her menses, in the future, are for a specific number of days in which she menstruates each month, then those days are her menses, whether they are less than seven days or more.'
557 - Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Salama al-Jazari reported to us, from al-Muthanna ibn al-Sabbah, from 'Ata', who said: 'If she is a virgin, then [she should wait] for the duration that her mother, or her sister, or her paternal aunt, or her maternal aunt, or her [other] female relatives used to sit.'
