594 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: al-Walid ibn Muslim informed us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Qays ibn Sa'd, from 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, who said: "There is nothing for al-tariyyah (spotting/slight discharge) after purity except ablution (wudu')."
595 - Al-Walid said: It was said to Abu 'Amr: What if it returned after a day or two? He said: "That is al-tariyyah, as long as it does not return after five days, in which case it would be a menstrual period that has come early and shifted from its [usual] days."
• And I heard Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, concerning the people of Medina, that the minimum period of purity is fifteen days; they set one menstrual period and one period of purity in a month.
596 - Ahmad ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: al-Fadl ibn Dukayn said: I heard Sufyan saying: "The people of Medina say: Between the two menstrual periods is fifteen [days]." I said: Do you adopt this view? He said: "Yes."
Chapter: In what [time frame] is a woman believed regarding the completion of her 'iddah (waiting period)?
• And Ahmad ibn Hanbal was asked—while I was listening—and it was said to him: In what [time frame] is a woman believed regarding the completion of the 'iddah? He said: "In a month—according to the hadith of 'Ali and Shurayh; if evidence is provided, and I believe her if the month has passed in her claim (1) without evidence; based on the hadith of Ubayy ibn Ka'b: 'The woman is trusted regarding her own private parts.'"
o His school of thought: That if it exceeds a month, then she claims the completion of the 'iddah; he believes her without evidence.
(1) Thus it appears in the original, and perhaps the correct word is "da'waha" (her claim).
