• And I heard Ishaq ibn Ibrahim say: "If she sees blood after her period of purity in less than ten days, she is a mustahadah (woman experiencing irregular bleeding). Among the generality of scholars, the period of purity is not less than ten days, and that is the shortest [duration] mentioned regarding the purity of women."
597 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: My father informed me, saying: I asked Ibn al-Mubarak, and he said (1): "Do you see the statement of Sufyan: 'A woman is believed regarding the completion of her 'iddah in a month,' how is this? And what is its meaning?" He said: "He set three [days] as a menstrual period, and ten as a period of purity, and three as a menstrual period, and ten as a period of purity, and three as a menstrual period."
• Ishaq said: "This is based on what 'Ali, Shurayh, Ibrahim, and 'Ata' mentioned, as they did not deny the completion of the 'iddah in a month, and that menstruation and purity can occur together three times in a month, for they did not deny [the claim of] one who claimed this duration.
They only verify this by asking the woman to bring evidence from the women who know of that. Had it not been possible for this to occur according to one of the women, they would not have needed to ask her for evidence, and they suspected her (2) in her claim for herself regarding the completion of her 'iddah; because the precaution in the completion of the 'iddah is [based on] the majority of the quru' (menstrual periods/intervals) and what is known of the prevalent state of women's menstruation, just as the precaution in prayer is [based on] the shortest [period] of menstruation when she is confused about it."
(1) Thus it appears in the original, and perhaps the correct word is "faqultu" (so I said). (2) Thus it appears in the original, and perhaps the correct word is "wa-ittahamuha" (and they suspected her).
