Chapter: The Snort and Saliva of a Cat

• I asked Ishaq about the snort of a cat. I said: A cat sneezed, and its saliva dripped onto my garment, or a cat licked my hand or my garment with its tongue, and the moisture of its tongue touched my garment or my hand? He said: "There is no harm in that, nor in its leftover water (su'r)," and he permitted it.

72 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: Dawud ibn Salih narrated to us, from his mother, that a freedwoman of 'A'ishah sent 'A'ishah some harisah (a dish made of meat and wheat). She said: I found her praying, so she gestured to me to place it down. She said: So I placed it down, and a cat came and took a bite out of it. When she finished [her prayer], she said to the women: "Eat," but they avoided the place where the cat's mouth had been. 'A'ishah then ate from where the cat had eaten, and then said: "It is not impure (najis); it is one of those who roam about among you (al-tawwafin), and I have seen the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, perform ablution from its leftover water."

• I said to Ishaq: Sometimes we toss bread to a cat, and it eats some of it and leaves some, and we feel disgusted to eat it, yet we dislike discarding it? He said: "If he feels disgusted by it, let him give it to a poor person."

Chapter: Praying in the Garment of the People of the Covenant (Ahl al-Dhimmah)

• Ahmad—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked about praying in the garment of a Jew or a Christian? He said: "One should not pray in anything of their garments that is adjacent to their body, such as the shirt, the trousers, or other things of that nature."
