698 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: 'Isa ibn Yunus informed us, saying: Zayd ibn 'Abd al-Hamid ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from his father, that 'Umar approached a slave girl of his, and she said: "I am menstruating." He disbelieved her and had intercourse with her, and then discovered she was indeed menstruating. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned that to him, so he said: "May Allah forgive you, Abu Hafs, give half a dinar in charity."
And I heard Ishaq also saying: "The Sunnah has already passed from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his Companions, along with the consensus of the Muslims upon that, that Allah has mandated the avoidance of sexual intercourse with them while they are menstruating until they become pure from menstruation, and likewise during her period of purity until she performs the ritual bath (ghusl) from her menstruation; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted: {So when they have purified themselves}, meaning: when they have performed ghusl, {then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you}, meaning to refrain from them, and that is the place where the child emerges. There is no harm for a man to embrace a menstruating woman, touch her, and enjoy her without having intercourse in the vagina."
(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct reading is "Hafs."
