Chapter: Washing Menstrual Blood from Garments

• I heard Ishaq say: "Washing menstrual blood from a garment is as Asma' bint Abi Bakr described; where she said: 'Scrape it or rub it.' When the blood is broken down in such a manner, then water touches it, it is more effective at removing the trace of the blood. This is because the passage of water over blood and similar substances adhering to a garment does not cleanse it as effectively as that which has been rubbed or scraped beforehand. Even if she were to do as 'Aishah did—where she would scrape the blood from her garment with her saliva until the trace of the blood was gone—that would be permissible, and water is more purifying, and that is a concession (rukhsah). So whoever says: 'It is not sufficient if the woman does as 'Aishah did,' has erred, for they (the wives of the Prophet) were the most knowledgeable regarding this. In what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Scrape it, then rub it, then sprinkle it with water,' is a clarification that washing it is sufficient without the need for three times; it is not as those people say: 'It is not sufficient without three washings, even if its trace is gone.'"

727 - Abu Bakr al-Humaydi narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, saying: Hisham ibn 'Urwah narrated to us, that he heard his wife, Fatimah bint al-Mundhir ibn al-Zubayr, say: I heard my grandmother, Asma' bint Abi Bakr, say that a woman asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about menstrual blood that gets onto a garment? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Scrape it, then rub it with water, then sprinkle it, and pray in it."

728 - Abu Ma'n al-Raqashi narrated to us, saying: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, from Thabit al-Haddad, from 'Adi ibn Dinar—the freed slave of Umm Qays—from Umm Qays bint Mihsan, who said: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about menstrual blood that gets onto a garment? He said: "Wash it with water and lote tree leaves (sidr), and rub it with a rib."
