Chapter: Threshing Grain with Donkeys

Ahmad ibn Hanbal was asked about threshing [grain] with donkeys, and he expressed strong disapproval of it due to the condition of their urine and dung. It was said: What if the wheat is washed? It was as if he disliked that wheat be threshed by anything whose meat is not eaten.

77 - 'Ubayd Allah ibn Mu'adh informed me, from his father, from Hisham, from Muhammad, that he used to dislike drinking donkey urine and seeking medical treatment with it.

Chapter: The Amount of Blood for Which Wudu Is Repeated

Ahmad was asked—while I was listening—about blood that exits the human body; from what amount should wudu be repeated? He said: "If it is excessive (fahishan)." I said: If a small amount comes out from the top of the wound? He said: "There is no wudu required for it."

78 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: al-Walid narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Amr said: "If a nosebleed flows or drips, perform wudu."

79 - Zayd ibn Yazid narrated to us, saying: Khalid ibn al-Harith narrated to us, saying: Hisham narrated to us, from Hammad, from Ibrahim, that he used to say—regarding blood that comes out from your mouth or your body while you are praying—: "If it is flowing blood, then turn away [from the prayer] and repeat your wudu; if it is not flowing, then continue your prayer."

I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal—on another occasion—being lenient regarding blood if it is a small amount, and he mentioned the hadith of Ibn al-Musayyab, that he inserted his ten fingers into his nose and pulled them out smeared with blood, and he mentioned the hadith of Ibn 'Umar, that he used to squeeze a pustule on his face, and pus (middah) would come out of it.

(1) The copyist vocalized it with a fathah on the mim, but the correct [vocalization] is with a kasrah. The term 'middah' refers to the purulent matter that collects in a wound; see: Lisan al-'Arab (3/399).

باب: دِيَاسِ الطَّعام بِالحَمير

• وسُئل أحمَد بن حَنبل عن الدِّياس بِالحَمير؟ فكَرِهَهُ كَرَاهِيةً شَديدَة؛ لِحَال أَبوالِها وأَرواثِها. قيل: فإن غُسِل البُرّ؟ فكأنَّه كَرِهَ أن يُداس البُرُّ بِشَيءٍ مِمَّا لا يُؤكَل لَحمُه.

٧٧ - أخبرني عُبَيدالله بن مُعاذ، عن أبيه، عن هِشام، عن محمد، أنه كان يَكرَه شُربَ أَبوال الأُتُن، والتَّداويَ بها.

باب: قَدر الدَّم الذي يُعَاد مِنه الوُضوء

• سُئل أحمَد -وأنا أسمع- عن الدَّم يَخرُج من جَسَد الإنسان؛ مِنْ قَدرِ كَم يُعَاد مِنه الوضوء؟ قال: «إذا كان فاحِشًا». قلت: إن خَرَج من رَأس الجُرح شَيءٌ يَسِير؟ قال: «لَيسَ عَلَيه وضوء».

٧٨ - حدثنا عَمرو بن عُثمان، قال: ثنا الوَليد، قال: قال أبو عَمرو: «إذا سَالَ الرُّعَافُ أو قَطر؛ توضَّأ».

٧٩ - حدثنا زَيد بن يَزيد، قال: ثنا خالِد بن الحارِث، قال: ثنا هِشام، عن حَمَّاد، عن إبراهيم، أنه كان يقول -في الدَّم يَخرُج من فِيك أو من جَسَدِك وأنت تُصَلِّي-؛ قال: «إن كان دَمًا سائلًا؛ فانفَتِل، فَأَعِد الوضوء، وإن لم يَكُن سائلًا؛ فامضِ في صَلاتك».

• وسمعت أحمَد بن حَنبل -مرةً أخرى- يُسَهِّلُ في الدَّم إذا كان قَليلًا، وذَكَر حديثَ ابن المسيَّب، أنه أَدخَلَ أصَابِعَه العَشر أنفَه، فأَخرَجَها مُتَلَطِّخَةً بالدَّم، وذَكر ⦗٨٦⦘ حديثَ ابن عُمَر، أنه كان يَعصِرُ البَثرة في وجهه، فيخرج منه مدَّةٌ (١).
