744 - "... and in it, and he raises his head and his mouth slightly when he begins, and when he raises his head" (1).
Chapter: Raising the Hands
I saw Abu 'Abd Allah ibn Hanbal raising his hands in prayer when he began the prayer, when he bowed, and when he said: "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him). Sometimes I saw him raising his hands to the lobes of his ears, sometimes he would raise them to his shoulders, and sometimes he would raise them to his chest; I saw that he considered the matter to be flexible.
I said to Ishaq: "What if he leaves the raising [of the hands] intentionally?" He said: "In the bowing, it is a valid prayer; he has left a Sunnah." I said: "Is his prayer deficient?" He said: "Is it permissible for me to say that Sufyan al-Thawri had a deficient prayer?!"
745 - Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us, saying: Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, saying: al-Rabi' ibn Sabih informed us, saying: "I saw al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, 'Ata', Tawus, Mujahid, Nafi', Qatadah, [371] Ibn Abi Najih, and al-Hasan ibn Muslim; when they entered into the prayer, they said the Takbir and raised their hands, and when they said the Takbir for the bowing, they raised their hands, except that the people of the Hijaz used to raise their hands when they stood up from the two rak'ahs of the obligatory prayer, and they would sit back on their heels."

Ibn Rajab recorded it in Fath al-Bari (4/301), saying: "It has been narrated from Ibn 'Umar and others that it is recommended to raise his head and face toward the sky as well with the Takbir. Harb extracted it with an authentic chain from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I asked Nafi' and said: 'Did Ibn 'Umar use to raise his head and face toward the sky when he said the Takbir for prayer?' He said: 'Yes, slightly.' And also through the path of Ibn Jurayj, he said: Ibn Sabit informed me that the manner of the Takbir is: that a man says the Takbir with his hands, his face, and his mouth, and he raises his head and his mouth slightly when he begins, and when he raises his head." The report of Ibn 'Umar was extracted by 'Abd al-Razzaq (2516) from Ibn Jurayj, and he also extracted (2515) from Ibn Jurayj the report of Ibn Sabit.
٧٤٤ - «... وفيه، ويَرفَع رأسَه وفاه شَيئًا حين يَبتَدئ، وحين يَرفَع رأسَه» (١).
باب: رَفع اليَدَين
• رأيت أبا عبد الله ابن حنبل يَرفَع يَدَيه في الصَّلاة إذا افتَتَح الصَّلاة، وإذا رَكَع، وإذا قال: «سَمِع الله لمن حَمِده»، ورُبَّما رأيته يَرفَع يَدَيه إلى فُروع أُذُنَيه، ورُبَّما رَفَعَهما إلى مَنكِبَيه، ورُبَّما رَفَعَهما إلى صَدره؛ رأيت الأمرَ عندَه واسعًا.
• قلت لإسحاق: فإن تَرَك الرفع مُتعمِّدا؟ قال: «في الركوع؛ هو جائزُ الصَّلاة؛ تَرَكَ سُنَّة». قلت: هو ناقِص الصَّلاة؟ قال: «يَجوز أن أقول: كان سُفيان الثوري ناقِصَ الصَّلاة؟!».
٧٤٥ - حدثنا أحمَد بن حَنبل، قال: ثنا هاشِم بن القاسِم، قال: أبنا الربيع بن صبيح، قال: «رأيت الحسَن وابن سيرين وعَطاء وطاوُسًا ومُجاهدًا ونافعًا وقَتادَة ⦗٣٧١⦘ وابن أبي نجيح والحسَن بن مُسلِم؛ إذا دَخَلوا في الصَّلاة كَبَّروا ورَفَعوا أيديهم، وإذا كَبَّروا للركوع رَفَعوا أيديهم، غيرَ أن أهل الحجاز كانوا يَرفَعون أيديهم إذا قاموا من الركعتين من الفَريضة، وكانوا يقعون على أعقابهم».
(١) كذا في الأصل، وفيه سقط بسبب انتقال النظر، وقد نقله ابن رجب في فتح الباري (٤/ ٣٠١)، قال: "وقد روي عن ابن عمر وغيره استحباب رفع رأسه ووجهه إلى السماء -أيضا- مع التكبير، خرجه حرب بإسناد صحيح عن ابن جريج، قال: سألت نافعا، فقلت: أكان ابن عمر إذا كبر بالصلاة يرفع رأسه ووجهه إلى السماء؟ فقال: "نعم، قليلا". ومن طريق ابن جريج -أيضا-، قال: أخبرني ابن سابط أن وجه التكبير: أن يكبر الرجل بيديه ووجهه وفيه، ويرفع رأسه وفاه شيئا حين يبتدئ، وحين يرفع رأسه". وأثر ابن عمر أخرجه عبد الرزاق (٢٥١٦) عن ابن جريج، وأخرج (٢٥١٥) عن ابن جريج -أيضًا- أثر ابن سابط.
