Chapter: The man who catches up with the Imam while he is sitting or prostrating; does he say: "Subhanaka Allahumma..."?
• I asked Ahmad ibn Hanbal, I said: A man arrived while the Imam was sitting, so he said the Takbir; does he say: "Subhanaka Allahumma..."? He said: "He says the Takbir and sits, and when the Imam concludes with Taslim, he stands up and recites: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika...'"
• And I asked Ahmad—another time—I said: If he catches up with him while bowing, and he says the Takbir and bows; does he recite the Tasbih? He said: "Yes." I said: And when he stands up; does he say: "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika..."? He said: "No, the position for the opening (iftitah) has passed him by."
• And Ahmad also said: "If he catches up with the Imam while he is sitting; he says the Takbir, sits, and performs the Tashahhud, and when he stands up, he says the Takbir."
• And I asked Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, I said: A man caught up with the Imam while he was sitting? He said: "He says the Takbir to open the prayer, then he says the Takbir to sit, then he stands up with a Takbir."
• And I heard Ishaq—another time—say: "If you arrive at the Imam while he is prostrating; say a Takbir intending with it the key to the prayer, then sit without saying the Takbir, and perform the Tashahhud. When you stand up, stand up with a Takbir, and your first Takbir is the key to the prayer."
772 - al-Musayyab ibn Wadih narrated to us, he said: Ibn al-Mubarak was asked: If he stands to make up (what he missed), does he stand up with a Takbir? He said: "Yes."
773 - Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us, he said: Umar ibn Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, he said: I asked al-Awza'i about the man who enters the mosque while the people are prostrating; does he prostrate with them, or does he say the Takbir and recite the words said at the opening of the prayer? He said: "He says the Takbir; he does not add to that." I said: But they have already performed one prostration? He said: "He prostrates with them for the final one."
