780 - Yahya ibn 'Uthman al-Himsiyy narrated to us, he said: Ibn Humayr narrated to me, he said: Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah narrated to me, from Ishaq ibn 'Abd Allah and Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz al-A'raj, from Muhammad ibn Maslamah, that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood to pray a voluntary prayer, he would say: "Allahu Akbar, 'Wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhi fatara as-samawati wal-arda hanifan wa ma ana min al-mushrikin' (I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of the polytheists)... up to: 'wa ana awwal al-muslimin' (and I am the first of the Muslims). O Allah, You are the King, there is no god but You, glory is to You and with Your praise," then he would recite.

781 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman ibn Sa'id narrated to us, he said: Shurayh ibn Yazid al-Hadramiyy narrated to us, he said: Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated to me, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) opened the prayer, he would pronounce the Takbir (saying Allahu Akbar), then say: "'Inna salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi rabbi al-'alamin' (Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds)..." to the end of the verse. "O Allah, guide me to the best of characters, for none guides to the best of them except You, and protect me from evil deeds and evil characters, for none protects from their evil except You."
