782 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir al-Dimashqi narrated to us, he said: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: Malik ibn Anas said: "These words are not from the obligatory parts of the prayer"—meaning: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdik' (Glory is to You, O Allah, and with Your praise)—"rather, the obligatory part of the prayer is the Opening Takbir (saying Allahu Akbar), then the recitation."

783 - Al-Walid said: And Isma'il informed me, from 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Ubaydullah, from Muhammad ibn 'Ali, that 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) would say when he opened the prayer: "'Wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhi fatara as-samawati wal-arda' (I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth)..." up to his saying: "'Wa bidhalika umirtu wa ana awwal al-muslimin' (And with that I was commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims)."

784 - Al-Walid said: I mentioned that to Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, so he informed me, on the authority of the elders (mashayikh), that they used to say these words when they turned their faces toward the Qiblah before the Opening Takbir, then they would follow the Opening Takbir with: "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdik, wa tabaraka ismuka, wa ta'ala jadduka, wa la ilaha ghayruk (Glory is to You, O Allah, and with Your praise, blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god other than You)," then the seeking of refuge (isti'adhah).

785 - Al-Walid said: Abu 'Amr was asked about seeking refuge from the accursed Satan after the Opening Takbir in the prayer? He acknowledged it and said: "He should say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ash-shaytan ar-rajim, innaka anta as-sami'u al-'alim' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan; indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing)."

786 - Al-Walid said: I asked Khulayd about that, so he narrated to me from al-Hasan and Qatadah, that they used to follow the Takbir with: "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdik, tabaraka ismuka, wa ta'ala jadduka, wa la ilaha ghayruk (Glory is to You, O Allah, and with Your praise, blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god other than You)," then: "A'udhu billahi as-sami' al-'alim (I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing)."
