And those behind the Imam remain silent, and listen to what the Imam recites aloud of the recitation; no one should recite with him in the prayer, and they should do, in what the Imam does not recite aloud of the recitation, the dhikr, and the supplication, the same as he does.
Chapter: Recitation in the Prayers
• I asked Ahmad ibn Hanbal, I said: Do you like for the recitation in the Dhuhr and 'Asr [prayers] to be close in length? He said: "No, but he should recite in the Dhuhr about [the length of] 'Alif Lam Mim Tanzil' (Surat al-Sajdah), or thirty verses, or about that, and in the 'Asr, half of that." He said: "I follow the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri."
• And I heard Ishaq say: "They used to like to recite in the Dhuhr [the length of] about thirty verses in the first rak'ah, and in the second [half] of that or more."
806 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from his father, he said: Umayyah informed me, from Abu Mijlaz, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed the Dhuhr [prayer] with his companions, then he prostrated, and they were of the opinion that he had recited: 'Alif Lam Mim Tanzil'; the Sajdah.
807 - Yahya ibn 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, saying: 'Abthar Abu Zubayd narrated to us, saying: Sulayman al-Taymi narrated to us, from Abu Mijlaz, from Ibn 'Umar, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led them in the Dhuhr prayer, and he recited for them the Sajdah, then he prostrated, then he raised his head, and stood up, and we thought he had recited: 'Alif Lam Mim Tanzil'; the Sajdah.
ويُنصِت مَنْ وراء الإمام، ويَستَمع لِمَا جَهَرَ به الإمام مِن القِراءة؛ لا يَقرأ مَعَه في الصَّلاة أحَد، ويَفعَلون فيما لم يَجهَر به الإمام مِن القِراءة والذِّكر والمسألة مِثلَ ما يَفعَل».
باب: القِراءة في الصَّلَوات
• سألت أحمَد بن حَنبل، قلت: أتُحبُّ أن تكون القِراءة في الظُّهر والعَصر مُتقارِبَتَين؟ قال: «لا، ولكن يَقرأ في الظُّهر بِنَحوٍ [مِن {تنزيل}] السجدة، أو ثلاثين آية، أو نَحوَ ذلك، وفي العَصر على نِصفٍ من ذلك». وقال: «أذهَب إلى حديث أبي سَعيد الخُدري».
• وسمعت إسحاق يقول: «قد كانوا يَستَحِبُّون أن يَقرؤوا في الظُّهر قَدرَ ثلاثين آيةً في الركعَة الأولى، وفي الثانية بِنِصفها أو أكثَر».
٨٠٦ - حدثنا سَعيد بن مَنصور، قال: ثنا مُعتَمِر بن سُلَيمان، عن أبيه، قال: أخبرني أمية، عن أبي مجلز، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلَّى بأصحابه الظُّهر، فسَجَد، فكانوا يَرَون أنه قَرأ: {الم تنزيل}؛ السجدة.
٨٠٧ - حدثنا يَحيى بن عبد الحَميد، قال: ثنا عبثر أبو زبيد، قال: ثنا سُلَيمان التيمي، ⦗٣٩٤⦘ عن أبي مجلز، عن ابن عُمَر، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلَّى بهم الظُّهر، فقرأ بهم السجدَة، فسَجَد، ثم رَفَعَ رأسه، فقام، فظَنَنَّا أنه قَرأ: {الم تنزيل}؛ السجدة.
