813 - Yahya al-Himmani narrated to us, saying: Sharik narrated to us, from Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an, from Zurarah ibn Awfa, who said: Abu Musa had me read a letter from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab to him, stating: "Recite to the people in the Fajr (dawn) prayer using the beginning of the Mufassal, in the Isha' prayer using the middle of the Mufassal, and in the Maghrib prayer using the end of the Mufassal."

814 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: Shayban Abu Mu'awiyah informed me, from al-A'mash, from al-Ma'rur ibn Suwayd, who said: "I went on Hajj with 'Umar ibn al-Khattab—may Allah be pleased with him—and he recited to us in the morning prayer in Mecca: {Have you not seen how your Lord dealt...} [Surat al-Fil], and: {For the accustomed security of the Quraish...} [Surat al-Quraysh]."

Chapter: Reciting the Surah in Prayer in [Sequential] Order

• I said to Ahmad: What about a man who recites in prayer in sequential order; one surah today, and the one that follows it tomorrow, and the like? He said: "There is nothing [wrong] with this, except that it is narrated from 'Uthman that he did that only with the Mufassal."

815 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid narrated to us, saying: Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn 'Ubayd Allah, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Umm al-Hakam, who said: "I prayed behind 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, and he used to recite in the morning prayer from Friday morning until the morning prayer on Thursday: from {Those who disbelieved} [Surat al-Kafirun] up to Surat al-Mumtahanah; fourteen surahs. And he used to recite in the Maghrib prayer from Friday evening until the Maghrib prayer on Thursday: from Surat al-Mursalat up to {I swear by this city} [Surat al-Balad]; fourteen surahs."
