Translation · EN

Chapter: Recitation on Friday Night

• I said to Ahmad: 'Should one recite on Friday night in the night prayer (al-'atamah) Surah al-Jumu'ah and: {Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High} [Surat al-A'la]?' He said: 'No, nothing has reached me regarding this (1),' and it was as if he disliked that.

820 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Durays narrated to us, saying: Abu Sinan narrated to us, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, who said: '...They used to consider it recommended to recite Surah al-Jumu'ah on Friday night so that people would know that the night is Friday night.'

Chapter: Recitation in the Two Eids

• I asked Ahmad about the recitation in the two Eids? He said: 'One may recite whatever one wishes,' and he did not validate any hadith regarding it, except that he said: 'It has come in the Friday prayer,' then he mentioned Surah al-Jumu'ah, and I believe he said: 'And [Surat] al-Munafiqun.'

• And I heard Ishaq saying: 'One should recite in the two Eids prayer: {Qaf} and: {The Hour has come near} [Surat al-Qamar].'

821 - Abu Bakr al-Humaydi narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, saying: Damrah ibn Sa'id narrated to me, saying: I heard 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Utbah saying: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) went out on the day of Eid and asked Abu Waqid al-Laythi: "With what did the Prophet (peace be upon him) recite on this day?" Abu Waqid replied: "With {Qaf} and: {The Hour has come near}."

Notes

(1) Thus it is in the original; the correct form is "shay'un".
