846 - Muhammad ibn Mu'awiyah narrated to us, saying: Sharik narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Harith, from 'Ali, who said: "If he forgets to recite in the first two [rak'ahs], he recites in the last two."
847 - Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: Zuhayr narrated to us, saying: Mughirah narrated to us, from Ibrahim, who said: A man said to al-Aswad: A man forgot to recite in the first two [rak'ahs]? He said: "I hope—if Allah wills—that it will suffice you(1) to recite in the last two."
848 - Muhammad ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: Hassan ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Sufyan said: "If he forgets to recite in three rak'ahs, and one rak'ah remains, he must restart the prayer, for there does not remain of his prayer enough to recite in."
Sufyan also said—regarding the Fajr prayer if one rak'ah remains and he did not recite in the first—: "He must restart." Regarding the Dhuhr, if he did not recite in the three [rak'ahs] and one rak'ah remains for him: "He must restart." Regarding the 'Asr: the same. Regarding the Maghrib, if one rak'ah remains for him: "He must restart." Regarding the 'Isha': the same. And: "If he forgets to recite in the first two and recites in the last two, it suffices him, and he performs the two prostrations of forgetfulness (sajdatay al-sahw)."
• I heard Ishaq again saying: "If you perform a rak'ah and do not recite in it, then you remember while you are bowing, raise your head, then recite, and then perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness.
But if you have already prostrated, then continue in your prostration, recite in what you are making up, and perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness."
(1) Thus it is in the original, and the appropriate [form] is "yujzi'uhu" (it suffices him).
