Chapter: Raising the Voice in Recitation During Prayers in Which Recitation is Audible
• Ahmad was asked about the recitation in the prayer in which recitation is audible, if one makes his own ears hear it? He said: "He should make those next to him hear it."
888 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: al-Barsani narrated to us, saying: Ibn Jurayj informed us, saying: I said to 'Ata': I recited in the morning prayer, and I whispered in some parts and raised my voice in others? He disliked that and said: "Raise your voice in all of it." I then recited in his presence, making myself hear my own pronunciation and understanding the words, though I did not make my own letters audible. I then said to him: Does this suffice for the recitation in the prescribed prayer where the voice should be raised? He said: "No, until you make the person next to you hear it, then it is sufficient for you."
• I said to Ahmad: What if one recites aloud in the voluntary daytime prayer? He said: "No, for the recitation of the day is done secretly, except in the solar eclipse prayer, for there is a difference of opinion regarding it."
Chapter: Raising the Voice in Daytime Prayer
• I heard Ishaq say: "The daytime prayer is silent ( 'ajma'), and if you like to let the people of your household hear the recitation of the day when you are in your house, that is permissible. It is only disliked in the mosque where they are praying, so that the recitation does not become confused for them, or where people are gathered for prayer."
889 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Umm 'Abd Allah bint Khalid—meaning: ibn Ma'dan—from her father, that he used to recite aloud in the daytime prayer in his house. She said: "And my mother used to do that, and he would not find fault with her for it."
(1) In the original manuscript, it is undotted (muhmala). (2) This is how it appears in the original; the correct version is "her father" (abiha). (3) This is how it appears in the original; the correct version is "she said" (qalat).
