925 - Muhammad ibn Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us, saying: Al-A'mash said, from 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi, who said: I saw Abu Sa'id, Ibn 'Abbas, and Ibn al-Zubayr rising in prayer on the balls of their feet.
Chapter: Rising from the Two Rak'ahs
He (Harb) said: I saw Ahmad, when he would rise from the two rak'ahs to stand, he would place his hands on his thighs and stand, and he would not place them on the ground.
926 - Abu al-Azhar narrated to us, saying: Habban ibn Hilal narrated to us, from Hammam, who said: Shaqiq Abu Layth narrated to us, from 'Asim ibn Shantim, from his father, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when he would rise at the interval of the two rak'ahs, he would rise on his knees and rely on his thighs.
927 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Al-Barsani narrated to us, saying: Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah informed us, from Abu Ma'shar, from Ibrahim, that he used to prefer that a man should not rely on the ground when he rises from the two rak'ahs.
928 - So I mentioned that to Qatadah, and he saw no harm in it, and said: "Stand however you wish."
(1) This is how it appears in the original; the correct word is "ya'tamid" (he relies). (2) This name is omitted in the original; the correct reading is "li-Qatadah" (to Qatadah). Ibn Rajab said in Fath al-Bari (5/146): "It has been narrated from many of the predecessors that one should rely on his hands when rising for the second rak'ah... and Qatadah granted a concession in this."
