Translation · EN

968 - Al-Humaydi narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, saying: Hisham ibn 'Urwah narrated to us, from his father, that 'Umar recited Surat al-Nahl on the pulpit on Friday, and he prostrated during it. Then, when the second Friday came, he recited it, and the people prepared to prostrate, so 'Umar said: 'Wait [in your places]; it has not been prescribed for us unless we will [to do so].'

• I heard Ishaq ibn Ibrahim say: 'If a man recites a [verse of] prostration while he is in an obligatory prayer, he should perform the prostration for it. If he is an imam, those behind him must follow him. And if that is in a prayer in which the recitation is not done aloud; what (1)

969 - Yazid ibn Harun informed me, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu Mijlaz, from Ibn 'Umar, that the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed Dhuhr (the noon prayer) with them, and he recited: "Al-Tanzil" (Surat al-Sajdah), and he prostrated for it.'

• Ishaq said: 'And this is what those after the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did, and those who said, "One should not recite the surah that contains a [verse of] prostration except in the morning prayer," are mistaken.'

Chapter: Raising the hands in the prostration of the Qur'an

• And I saw Ahmad ibn Hanbal descend for prostration upon reciting a [verse of] prostration, and he raised his hands.

• I asked Ishaq about a man who recites a [verse of] prostration in an obligatory prayer, and he descends for prostration; should he raise his hands? He said: 'Yes.' I asked him again, and he said: 'Yes.'

(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct reading is perhaps "kama" (as).
