As for the answering of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to him when he asked them about what Dhu al-Yadayn described, they had no choice but to answer him, because it was not permissible for them or anyone else—if the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them about something—not to answer him, whether they were in prayer or otherwise. Allah (the Exalted) said: {Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life}. This is not obligatory for anyone today except through gesturing and tasbih (saying 'Subhan Allah'), for those are the two rulings that remained for the person praying after the abrogation of speech.
• Abu Ya'qub said: "Whenever one of the imams, who have appointed themselves to fulfill the obligation of the Muslims, makes a mistake, it is not permissible for those behind him—when he makes a mistake—to inform him using the form of speech. Rather, they should use what is possible for them from gesturing and tasbih; it is an established Sunnah from the Prophet (peace be upon him)."
(1) In the original, it reads: "ila ma yuhyikum", while the verse is as I have established [the correct reading: "limā yuḥyīkum"]. (2) In the original, the letter 'ba' is without dots, and perhaps there is an omission here, or this phrase might be an interpolation.
وأما إجابَة أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على نَفسِهِ إيَّاه لمَّا سألهم عمَّا وَصَفَ ذو اليَدَين؛ فلَم يَجِدوا بُدًّا من إجابَته؛ لأنه لم يَحِلَّ لهم ولا لِغَيرهم إذا سألهم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن شَيءٍ إلا أن يُجيبوه؛ كانوا في صَلاةٍ أو غَيرها؛ قال الله -تعالى-: {استجيبوا لله وللرسول إذا دعاكم لما يحييكم (١)}، ولا يَجِبُ اليَومَ ذلك على أحَدٍ إلا بالإشارة والتسبيح؛ لأنهما حُكمان بَقِيا للمُصَلِّي بَعدَ نَسخ الكَلام».
• قال أبو يَعقوب: «فكُلَّما سَهَا ساهٍ من الأئمة الذي نَصَبوا أنفُسَهم لِقَضاء فَرض المُسلِمين، وعلى مَنْ خَلفَه لِسَهوه البته (٢)؛ لم يَحلَّ لَه أن يُخبِرَه بِصِيغَة الكَلام، ولكن ⦗٤٧٣⦘ ما أمكَنَه من الإشارة والتسبيح؛ سُنَّة مَسنونَة من النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم».
