1010 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, saying: Hisham informed us, from al-Hasan, who said: "If the imam is unaware of the prostration, the people should perform tasbih (say 'SubhanAllah'). If he prostrates, they prostrate with him; otherwise, a man should say to him: 'Prostrate.' If he prostrates, then good; if not, they should prostrate themselves. There is nothing upon the one who commands him to do so except the two prostrations."
1011 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: I said to Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i and Malik ibn Anas: "What is your view if an imam forgets during his prayer, and the two prostrations of forgetfulness become incumbent upon him, then he performs the taslim from his prayer and leaves without prostrating? Should those behind him prostrate?" They both said: "Yes."
1012 - He said: I asked al-Layth ibn Sa'd, and he said the same.
1013 - al-Walid said: Abu 'Amr was asked about an imam who performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness without any forgetfulness having occurred to him; should those behind him prostrate? He said: "They should prostrate," then he retracted and said: "No."
Chapter: Regarding one who forgets during the two prostrations of forgetfulness
• Ahmad was asked about a man who forgets during the two prostrations of forgetfulness? He said: "There is no forgetfulness (required) upon him."
• And I heard Ishaq say: "It is the consensus of the people of knowledge among the Tabi'in that there is no forgetfulness within the prostration of forgetfulness. Those who said: 'He should prostrate if he thinks that something of the two prostrations of forgetfulness remains for him, and then he should prostrate for that,' are mistaken."
1014 - Muhammad ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: Hassan narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mughirah, from Ibrahim, who said: "There is no forgetfulness within the two prostrations of forgetfulness." He means: If one forgets during them, he should prostrate for what he doubted, but he should not perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness for those two.
(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct form is "yasjudun" (they should prostrate).
