1015 - Abu Taqi Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik al-Himsi narrated to us, saying: Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from 'Ata', who said: "If a man forgets during the two prostrations of forgetfulness, he should treat them as two rak'ahs when he remembers them."
Chapter: Regarding one who missed part of the prayer with the imam, while the imam has forgotten
• I asked Ahmad, and said: A man misses part of the prayer with the imam, and the imam has already forgotten before him? He said: "He should prostrate with the imam for the two prostrations of forgetfulness, then he should stand up."
• I saw Ishaq enter the mosque when the imam had already prayed one rak'ah of the 'Asr prayer, and the imam had a forgetfulness (to account for), so the imam prostrated before the salutation. He (Ishaq) prostrated with the imam before the salutation, then stood up and performed that rak'ah he had missed."
• Ishaq was asked - another time - it was said: A man comes to the imam and has missed part of the prayer, and the imam had forgotten before him; should he prostrate with the imam for the two prostrations of forgetfulness and then perform what he missed? He said: "Yes."
Then Abu Ya'qub also said: "As for me, I say: He should not prostrate with the imam; because he has an obligatory duty that he has missed, so he should not prostrate until he has performed the obligatory part," and words to that effect.
• I heard Ishaq - another time - say: "If the imam precedes you by one or two rak'ahs, and the imam has a forgetfulness (to account for), then the imam prostrates and the one who missed part of the prayer (al-masbuq) prostrates with him. When the imam performs the salutation, he (the masbuq) stands up and completes what he missed of his prayer; that is permissible."
(1) Thus it is in the original, and perhaps the correct word is "al-salam" (the salutation).
