Volume 1 · Page 423

Translation · EN

1019 - Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: I said to Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i: What do you think about someone who rises from his first tashahhud out of forgetfulness, and remembers before he has lifted himself off the ground; should he sit down? He said: "Yes." I said: And there is no prostration required for him? He said: "No."

I said to Abu 'Amr: But what if he has already lifted himself up standing, then remembers? He said: "He should proceed with his prayer." I said: What if he sits and recites the tashahhud, then completes the remainder of his prayer? He said: "He has acted poorly, but his prayer is valid." I said: And there is no prostration required for him? He said: "No."

Abu 'Amr said: "The Sunnah, if you have stood erect from the first tashahhud in the obligatory prayer—whether it be Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, or 'Isha—is to proceed, complete your prayer, and then perform two prostrations of forgetfulness."

1020 - Al-Walid said: Isma'il informed me, from Ishaq ibn 'Abdullah ibn Abi Farwah, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that he stood up from the first two rak'ahs, so the people said: "Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)." He signaled to them with his hand to stand, so they stood. When he sat for the salutation, he recited his first tashahhud, then performed two prostrations of forgetfulness for the mistake of his rising.

1021 - Al-Walid said: I said to Abu 'Amr: What do you think if I forget the first tashahhud and stand up from it, and I do not remember until I have stood erect? He said: "Proceed until you complete your prayer, then prostrate for the two prostrations of forgetfulness, then give the salutation." I said: So the two prostrations of forgetfulness are before the salutation? He said: "Yes."
