1064 - Ahmad ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: Nu'aym ibn Hammad informed us, saying: Sufyan al-Thawri used to say: "If he abandons prayer intentionally, while being able to establish it within the time, and he does not pray until the time expires, I order his execution."

1065 - Abu al-Rabi' al-Zahrani narrated to us, saying: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, saying: 'Amr ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah - may Allah be pleased with them both - who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Between the servant and disbelief is the abandonment of prayer."

Chapter: One Who Does Not Distinguish the Obligatory (Fard) from the Supererogatory (Sunnah)

• And I heard a woman who asked Ishaq, saying: "I have prayed the morning (al-ghadah) prayer for fifty years as four rak'ahs; I did not distinguish between the two rak'ahs of the Sunnah and the two rak'ahs of the obligatory (fard) prayer, and [I prayed] the Dhuhr as eight rak'ahs; I did not distinguish the obligatory from the voluntary (tatawwu')." He said to her: "Did you know that you have an obligation (fard)?" She said: "Yes, I have known that I owe the morning prayer of two rak'ahs as an obligation from Allah, and the Dhuhr of four rak'ahs." Abu Ya'qub (Ishaq) held the view that this was sufficient for her and that there is no repetition required of her in that, and he said to her: "When you stand for the morning prayer, begin with the two rak'ahs of the Sunnah. If you miss them, there is nothing upon you and no making them up (qada')."

1066 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: Abu Ma'shar narrated to us, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, that he entered the mosque while the people were in the morning prayer, so he entered with them, and when the sun rose, he stood and prayed two rak'ahs.
