Chapter: The Imam stands from his Tashahhud while the follower still has a portion of it remaining
• Ahmad was asked about a man who has a portion of his Tashahhud remaining in the second rak'ah, but the Imam stands up before he finishes it. He said: "The Imam was only appointed to be followed." Then he said: "Alqamah said: 'We have an imam who does not complete the bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujud), so we complete them [ourselves].'"
1095 - Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us, he said: Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fell from a horse, was grazed, and prayed sitting; so we prayed with him sitting. Then he turned away and said: "The Imam was only appointed to be followed. So when he says 'Allahu Akbar,' say 'Allahu Akbar,' when he bows, bow, when he says 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah,' say 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd,' when he prostrates, prostrate, and when he prays sitting, pray sitting, all of you."
1096 - Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us, he said: Umar ibn Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, he said: I asked al-Awza'i about an imam of a people who does not complete the bowing or the prostration; should I pray with him? He said: "Yes, and you shall complete [them yourself]."
Chapter: What invalidates the prayer
• I asked Abu Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Hanbal, saying: Does anything invalidate the prayer? It was as if he leaned towards [the ruling regarding] the black dog.
1097 - Abd al-Wahhab ibn al-Dahhak narrated to us, he said: Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash narrated to us, from Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, from Mujahid, from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "The black dog invalidates the prayer."
