1159 - Nasr ibn 'Ali narrated to us, saying: Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Fada', from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I came to 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard him say: "How can a man miss the prayer when what is between the East and the West is the Qiblah, as long as he does not intentionally face the East?"
1160 - Muhammad ibn Mu'awiyah narrated to us, saying: 'Abd Allah ibn Ja'far narrated to us, from 'Uthman ibn Muhammad, from Sa'id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What is between the East and the West is the Qiblah."
Chapter: Regarding the one who prays facing other than the Qiblah, then the Qiblah becomes clear to him
• I said to Ahmad: A man prayed facing other than the Qiblah, then it became clear to him? He said: "People have differed regarding that."
• I asked Ahmad ibn Hanbal - another time - I said: A man prayed facing other than the Qiblah, then it became clear to him after he had finished praying that he had been facing other than the Qiblah? He said: "He should use his own judgment (yataharra)." I said: And if he had used his own judgment? He said: "His prayer is valid, and he does not repeat it."
I said: What if he prayed part of his prayer, then it became clear to him while he was in the prayer that he was facing other than the Qiblah? He said: "He should turn toward the Qiblah." I said: Does he build upon his prayer, or does he restart? He said: "He builds upon his prayer."
• And I heard Abu Ya'qub Ishaq ibn Ibrahim say: "Allah (Blessed and Exalted be He) said: {We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased}, meaning: the Ka'bah; so it is incumbent upon all of creation to face the Qiblah wherever they may be directed, whether from the East or the West."
