1242 - Yahya ibn 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, he said: Sharik informed us, from Abu al-Haytham, who said: I said to Ibrahim: "Shall I pray in a qamis and a qaba'?" He said: "Tie your waist, even if with a camel hobble (iqal)."
Chapter: One Who Lifts His Garment or His Hair While Praying
• I said to Ahmad: "A man prays while having folded his sleeves (khuffayhi - note: context implies the sleeves or garment)?" He said: "It pleases me that he lets them down."
And Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad] said: "When a man prays, he should not lift his garment, nor his hair, nor anything of that nature, because he is prostrating."
• Ishaq ibn Ibrahim was asked about a man praying while sitting with his legs drawn up (muhtabiyan)? He said: "Yes, there is no harm in it."
1243 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, he said: Marwan ibn Muhammad narrated to us, he said: Yahya ibn Hamzah narrated to us, he said: Thawr narrated to me, and said: "I saw Khalid ibn Ma'dan praying while sitting with his legs drawn up, and when he wanted to bow, he would untie his legs."
Chapter: How One Prays While Sitting
• I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal say: "When a man prays sitting, he should make his standing posture a cross-legged position (tarabbu')." I said: "Is that what you hold [as the position]?" - meaning the cross-legged position - He said: "Yes." I said: "And when he bows?" He said: "He should fold his legs." I said: "Does he not bow while in the cross-legged position?" He said: "No." I said: "And the sitting?" He said: "He should fold his legs and sit upon them as one sits in prayer."
1244 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, he said: Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, who said: "If you pray sitting, then sit cross-legged in your prayer, and when you bow, fold your legs."
