Chapter: The Sick Person Prostrating on a Cushion

• It was said to Ahmad: Should the sick person prostrate on a cushion or something similar, or should he gesture? He said: "All of this has been reported. If he wishes, he may prostrate on something, and if he wishes, he may gesture."

• And I heard him say: "He may prostrate on a pillow."

• I asked Ishaq about prostrating on a pillow, and he said: "Gesturing is more beloved to me."

1261 - 'Ubayd Allah ibn Mu'adh narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to us, he said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Qatadah, who heard Umm al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan, that she used to spend the night with Umm Salamah—may Allah be pleased with her—and she would prostrate on a pillow because of a pain she had in her eye.

1262 - Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us, he said: Zuhayr narrated to us, he said: Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Abu Fazara, who said: I asked Ibn 'Abbas—may Allah be pleased with them both—: Should a man who is sick pray on a clean garment? He said: "Yes, if he cannot reach the ground, then let him pray on a pure garment and a pure pillow."

1263 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, he said: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqamah, who said: 'Abdullah entered upon his brother 'Utbah to visit him, and said: "If you are able to prostrate, do so; otherwise, gesture with your head."
