Chapter: The One Who Faints
• I asked Ahmad about the one who faints? He said: "He must repeat all the prayers."
• And I asked Ishaq about the one who faints; does he repeat the prayers? He said: "He does not repeat the prayers, except for the prayer of the day in which he regains consciousness."
• I also heard Ishaq say: "The Sunnah regarding the one who faints has come down in several ways:
Among them are those who make his ruling that of the sleeper; he makes up the prayer,
And among them are those who treat him like the insane person; he does not make it up,
The most moderate position is: that if the one who faints regains consciousness during his day, he prays both prayers together. The two prayers are: if it is during the day, then Dhuhr and 'Asr; and if it is at night, then Maghrib and 'Isha.
If he remains unconscious for several days, then regains consciousness, he makes up the prayer of his [regaining] day. If he regains consciousness at the end of the night, he makes up the prayer of his night."
He said: "The people of knowledge differed regarding this:
One group held that the one who faints makes up the prayer just as he makes up the fast, likening him to the sleeper, but this is not a correct position,
Others held that he does not make up anything, unless he regains consciousness during the time of a prayer, in which case he makes up that prayer. Whoever holds this view is obligated to command him to make up two prayers, as we have commanded, because the time of 'Asr is joined with the time of Dhuhr, and 'Isha with the time of Maghrib, for those with valid excuses—such as the one fearing harm while traveling, the one experiencing rain, and the menstruating woman, as she is commanded that if she becomes pure before Maghrib, she prays Dhuhr and 'Asr together, and if she becomes pure before Fajr, she prays Maghrib and 'Isha. Likewise, the one who faints, if he regains consciousness at the end of the day, he prays Dhuhr and 'Asr, and if he regains consciousness before Fajr, he prays Maghrib and 'Isha; for as long as he is unconscious, he is like the insane or feeble-minded person."
