Masa'il Harb al-Kirmani: Book of Purification (Taharah) and Prayer (Salah) - Edited by al-Surayyi'
Volume 1 · Page 529

Translation · EN

He said: "A bondswoman (amah) may pray without a head-covering, and it is not required for a bondswoman to cover her head, whether she is old or young."

• Abu Ya'qub said: "When a young girl reaches menstruation, the preferred practice for her is what Umar ibn al-Khattab and those after him established: three garments. She should use one of them as a loincloth (izar), and the other two as a chemise (dir') and a head-covering (khimar). If she prays in two garments, she prays in a chemise and a head-covering that covers the two feet. If she lets her garment trail in prayer, that is more beloved to us because of what the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, established for them regarding the hems: a span.

As for the umm al-walad (a bondswoman who has borne her master's child), she may pray without a head-covering if she wishes, just as a bondswoman prays, because her status is the status of bondswomen as long as her master is alive; she is only freed after the master [dies]."

1277 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: al-Mu'tamir informed us, saying: I heard my father narrating from Ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah, from Umar ibn al-Khattab - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: "A woman should pray in three garments if she is able: a chemise, a head-covering, and a loincloth."

1278 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Ubaydullah, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, who said: "A woman prays in a chemise, a head-covering, and a mantle (milhafah)."

Notes

(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct [grammatical] form is "wa al-akharan" (and the other two). (2) In the original, it is unmarked except for the letter 'fa', and perhaps it is as I have established [in the text].

Notes
