Masa'il Harb al-Kirmani: Book of Purification (Taharah) and Prayer (Salah) - Edited by al-Surayyi'
Volume 1 · Page 537

Translation · EN

1300 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman al-Himsi narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Hasan al-Ansari narrated to us, saying: Abu Ishaq al-Fazari said to us: "Take from Yusuf ibn Asbat the measurements for Dhuhr and 'Asr."

1301 - He said: I heard Yusuf ibn Asbat say: "In twenty-four days of June, the sun reaches its limit in elevation and in movement at its rising and at its setting, and the shadow is at its shortest. It declines at one and a half feet, which is the beginning of the time for Dhuhr. The beginning of the time for 'Asr is at eight and a half feet; increasing by seven feet over the one and a half feet.

In twenty-four days of July, the sun declines at three feet, which is the beginning of the time for Dhuhr. The beginning of the time for 'Asr is at ten feet. This is because it increases by one and a half feet each month at the time of declination (zawal), and it increases by seven feet for the beginning of the time for 'Asr.

In August, it declines at four and a half feet, and it increases by seven feet for the time of 'Asr.

In September, it declines at six feet, and it increases by seven feet for the beginning of the time for 'Asr.

In November, it declines at nine feet, and it increases by seven feet for the beginning of the time for 'Asr.

In December, it declines at ten and a half feet, and the beginning of the time for 'Asr is at seventeen and a half feet. This is the limit of the length of the shadow and the declination of the sun toward the Qibla. Then the sun returns, and the shadow shortens by the same amount it increased in each month, one and a half feet (1) for the remaining six months as well."

1302 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: al-Walid narrated to us, saying: I mentioned to Abu 'Amr the time of Dhuhr? He said: "The mu'adhdhin of 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz used to call the adhan for Dhuhr when six hours of the day had passed, which is when the seventh hour enters. Then he would wait, and when the eighth hour entered, he would command the prayer to be performed."

Notes

(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct form is: "qadaman wa nisfan" (a foot and a half).
