I said to Abu 'Amr: "So when is the time for 'Asr?" He said: "The mu'adhdhin of 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz would call the adhan for 'Asr when the tenth hour began, then he would command the prayer to be performed." Abu 'Amr then said: "That is when three hours remain of the day, which is the final quarter of the day."
1303 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: Malik informed me, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from 'Abd Allah ibn Rafi'—the freed slave of Umm Salamah—from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "Pray 'Asr when your shadow (1) is your size plus an additional three feet, until your shadow is twice your size."
1304 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: al-Walid narrated to us, saying: 'Ali ibn Hawshab informed me that he heard Makhul say: "Pray 'Asr when your shadow is your size plus an additional three feet, until your shadow is twice your size."
1305 - Al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Munir (2) narrated to us, saying: al-Husayn ibn 'Ali ibn al-Aswad al-Kufi narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Adam ibn Mubarak (3) narrated to us, from Sufyan, who said: "The minimum at which the sun declines is one foot, and the maximum at which it declines is nine feet."
(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct form is: "zilluka" (your shadow). (2) In the original it is left without diacritics, and perhaps it should be: "Al-Qasim ibn Yahya ibn Nasr." (3) Thus it is in the original, and it is possible that the correct reading is: "Yahya ibn Adam and Ibn Mubarak."
