148 - Abdullah ibn Abd al-Jalil al-Basri narrated to us, he said: Abdullah ibn Nujay narrated to us, from Muhammad al-Kindi, he said: Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If a drop of nabidh (fermented drink) containing dregs fell into a large vessel (hubb) of rainwater, the water in that vessel would become unlawful."
149 - Muhammad ibn Bahr narrated to us, he said: Abd al-A'la narrated to us, he said: Ibrahim ibn Yazid narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Ubayd ibn Umayr, he said: "If a drop of wine fell into a jar filled with water, that water would become unlawful for its inhabitants to use."
• I said to Ishaq: "What about a piece of pitch (zaft) that was taken out of a skin containing wine; can it be used to plug cracks?" He said: "If the pitch is the predominant substance, there is no harm in it."
Chapter: Wine Poured into Vinegar
• I asked Ishaq again: "A cup of wine poured into a jar of vinegar?" He said: "He should not use it for seasoning immediately." It seemed he held the view that it should be left until the vinegar becomes strong, and he mentioned the hadith of Umar: "Eat from the wine what Allah has caused to spoil."
150 - Mahmud ibn Khalid narrated to us, he said: Umar ibn Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, he said: I heard al-Awza'i say—regarding a cup of wine thrown into vinegar—he said: "It should not be consumed in its place, but it should be left for the amount of time one perceives it would have changed had it not been placed into it; then it may be consumed, for it is in the position of wine when it is placed into murri (a type of fermented condiment)."
(1) Thus it is in the original, and perhaps the correct word is "Yahya". Harb has narrated in more than one place from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Abd al-A'la. See: (36), (142), (333), (382), (902), (1009), and (1241).
