Chapter: One Who Sneezes While in the Latrine

• I said to Ahmad: If a person is in the latrine and sneezes? He said: "He should praise Allah within himself."

160 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, he said: Hushaym narrated to us, he said: Husayn informed us, from al-Sha'bi—regarding a man who sneezes in the latrine—he said: "He should praise Allah within himself."

161 - Sa'id narrated to us, he said: Hushaym and Isma'il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, they said: Ibn 'Awn informed us, from Ibn Sirin—regarding a man who sneezes in the latrine—he said: "I know of no harm in him remembering Allah within himself."

Chapter: Istinja' (Cleaning Oneself After Defecation)

• Ahmad was asked about performing istinja' with three stones? He said: "As for me, I follow the stones with water, but istinja' with three stones is sufficient if it cleanses the area in place of water."

He said: "No hadith regarding istinja' with water has been authenticated from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him." It was said: What about the hadith of 'A'ishah? He said: "It is the hadith of Mu'adhah from 'A'ishah, and it is not authentic, because no one other than Qatadah attributed it to the Prophet (rafa'ahu)."

• And I heard Ishaq ibn Ibrahim say: "Three stones, when you perform istinja' with them, are sufficient for you and serve as a replacement for water. That you perform istinja' with water after using the stones is more beloved to me if you see that wiping with stones was not sufficient for you. And do not perform istinja' with your right hand, nor face the qiblah, nor turn your back towards it while passing excrement or urine."
