Chapter: How to Perform Istinja' with Stones
• Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] was asked: How is istinja' performed with stones? He said: "Three stones." It was said: What if there is one stone that has three edges? He said: "If it is large."
• And I heard Ishaq [ibn Rahwayh] say: "Do not perform istinja' with a bone or dung [raji']—meaning: excrement. And we dislike performing istinja' with what has already been used for istinja' before, unless the stone is large and has edges; then if one performs istinja' with the edge that has not been used, it is sufficient. And if one rubs the stone until the filth is gone from it, it is also sufficient."
166 - Ishaq narrated to us, he said: Waki' narrated to us, from Sinan al-Barjami, from al-Hasan,
167 - And Hafs ibn Ghiyath, from Mis'ar, from 'Abd al-Malik, he said: "There is no harm in it if he flips it or rubs it."

باب: كَيف الاستِنجاء بالأحجار
• سُئل أبو عبد الله: كيف الاستِنجاء بالأحجار؟ قال: «ثلاثة أحجار». قيل: فإن كان حَجَرٌ له ثلاثة أطراف؟ قال: «إذا كان كبيرًا».
• وسمعت إسحاق يقول: «لا تَستَنجِ بِعَظمٍ ولا رَجيع -يعني: العَذِرَة-، ونَكرَه أن يَستَنجِي بما قد استُنجِي به مَرَّةً، إلا أن يكون الحَجَر عَظيمًا له حُرُوف، فإن استَنجَى بالحرف الذي لم يُستنجَى (١) به؛ أَجزَأه، وإن حَكَّ الحَجَر حتى ذَهَب عنه القَذَر أجزأه -أيضًا-».
١٦٦ - حدثنا إسحاق، قال: ثنا وَكيع، عن سِنَان البرجمي، عن الحسَن،
١٦٧ - وحَفص بن غياث، عن مسعر، عن عبد الملِك، قال (٢): «لا بأس به إذا قَلَبَه أو حَكَّه».
