Masa'il Harb al-Kirmani: Book of Purification (Taharah) and Prayer (Salah) - Edited by al-Surayyi'
Volume 1 · Page 63

Translation · EN

168 - Hudba ibn Khalid narrated to us, he said: Hammad ibn al-Ja'd narrated to us, he said: Qatada narrated to us, he said: Khallad al-Juhani narrated to us, from his father al-Sa'ib, that the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "If one of you enters the privy, let him cleanse himself with three stones."

And I heard Ishaq—on another occasion—say: "It does not please us to exceed seven times in istinja'; because the most that has reached us from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is that he commanded the washing of impurities seven times, and less than that is sufficient as long as purification is achieved."

He said: "If one wipes with three stones that are not dung, that is sufficient; it is a prescribed Sunnah, and there is no disagreement among the scholars regarding that, unless he has loose stools that cause the impurities to spread beyond the area of the anus. In that case, washing becomes mandatory for him. And if there are hemorrhoids or similar conditions in the area of his anus from which discharge flows, wiping with stones will not suffice for him at that time; because it has mixed with that which one has not been commanded to wipe with stones."

169 - Ishaq said: And 'Abdah ibn Sulayman informed us, from Hisham ibn 'Urwa, from 'Amr ibn Khuzayma, from 'Umara ibn Khuzayma, from Khuzayma ibn Thabit al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said—regarding purification (istitaba): "[With] three stones, in which there is no dung."
