• And I asked Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, I said: "A man forgot the rinsing of the mouth and inhaling of water, and he wiped over his khuffayn (leather socks)?" He said: "He must repeat the prayer."
• And I heard Ishaq—another time—say: "If you forget the rinsing of the mouth and inhaling of water during wudu' and you have already prayed, it does not suffice you until you repeat [the prayer]. And if you forget the rinsing of the mouth and inhaling of water in the case of janabah, then rinse your mouth and inhale water, and repeat the prayer."
• And I heard Ishaq say: "They are the same in both wudu' and janabah."
• And I heard Ishaq—another time—say: "Rinsing the mouth and inhaling water are mandatory in wudu'. It is not permissible for anyone performing wudu' or ghusl (full ritual bath) to omit that under any circumstances. In what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) established—where he washed his face three times in wudu', and rinsed his mouth and inhaled water three times—is the clarification of what we have described. Moreover, Ibn al-Mubarak said: 'He must repeat the prayer if he omits them both in wudu'.'
177 - Our companions informed us of that: Sufyan ibn 'Abd al-Malik and others, from Ibn al-Mubarak."
178 - Abu Ma'n narrated to us, he said: 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Hammad—regarding a man who forgets the rinsing of the mouth and inhaling of water; he said: "He must repeat the prayer."
179 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, he said: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Awza'i, from al-Zuhri, who said: "If one forgets the rinsing of the mouth and inhaling of water, his prayer is valid; the repetition [of prayer] is only for what Allah has named in His Book."
• وسألت إسحاق بن إبراهيم، قلت: رجلٌ نَسِي المَضمَضَة والاستِنشاق، ومَسَح على خُفَّيه؟ قال: «يُعِيد الصَّلاة».
• وسمعت إسحاق -مرةً أخرى- يقول: «إن نَسِيت المَضمَضَة والاستِنشاق في الوضوء وقد صَلَّيت؛ لم يُجزِك حتى تُعِيد، وإن نَسِيت المَضمَضَة والاستِنشاق في الجَنابَة؛ فمَضمِض واستَنشِق، وأَعِد الصَّلاة».
• وسمعت إسحاق يقول: «هما في الوضوء والجَنابَة سَواء».
• وسمعت إسحاق -مرةً أخرى- يقول: «المَضمَضَة والاستِنشاق فَرضٌ في الوضوء، لا يَجوز لأَحَدٍ من المُتَوَضِّئين والمُغتَسِلين أن يَترُك ذلك على حالٍ من الحال، وفيما سَنَّ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم -حيث غَسَل وَجهَه ثلاثًا في الوضوء، ومَضمَض واستَنشَق ثلاثًا- بَيانُ مَا وصَفنا، مع أن ابن المبارَك قال: «يُعِيد الصَّلاة إذا تَرَكَهما في الوضوء»:
١٧٧ - أخبرنا بذلك: أَصحابنا؛ سُفيان بن عبد الملِك وغَيرُه، عن ابن المبارَك».
١٧٨ - حدثنا أبو معن، قال: ثنا عبد الرحمن، ثنا سُفيان، عن حَمَّاد -في رجلٍ نَسِي المَضمَضَة والاستِنشاق-؛ قال: «يُعِيد الصَّلاة».
١٧٩ - حدثنا عَمرو بن عُثمان، قال: ثنا الوَليد بن مُسلِم، عن الأوزاعي، عن الزُّهري، قال: «إذا نَسِي المَضمَضَة والاستِنشاق مَضَت صلاته، إنما الإعادَة ممَّا سَمَّى الله في كِتابه».
