• And I heard Ishaq—another time—saying: "If you forget to wipe your head, and there is moisture on your hand or in your beard, it suffices you to wipe with what is on your hand or beard. And that you take new water is more beloved to me, because of what is mentioned regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he took new water for his head, and it has not been authentically reported from him that he wiped his head with what remained on his hands. It has also not been authentically reported from him regarding forgetfulness that it is not permissible unless one takes new water, and some of the people of knowledge after him held that view, so it is permissible."
185 - Ishaq said: And Abdullah ibn Wahb informed me, he said: Amr ibn al-Harith informed us, from Habban ibn Wasi', from Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn 'Asim, that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) perform wudu', and that he wiped his head with water other than the excess water of his wudu'.
186 - Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Naysaburi narrated to us, he said: Abdullah ibn Nafi' narrated to us—by recitation—from Malik ibn Anas... [a person] forgot to wipe over his socks until his wudu' had dried, and he prayed? He said: "Let him wipe over his socks, then repeat the prayer, and he does not need to repeat the wudu' if he had entered them while they were both [the feet] in a state of purity."
• ... [a person] forgot to wipe over his socks? He said: "If the wudu' has dried, he repeats the wudu', and if it has not dried, it suffices him to wipe over his socks."
(1) The copyist left a blank space for approximately five words, and its completion is: "that he was asked about a man who performed wudu' while wearing his socks"; see: al-Muwatta' (74 in the narration of Yahya, 92 in the narration of Abu Mus'ab). (2) The copyist left a blank space for approximately four words, and perhaps its completion is: "And Ishaq—or Ahmad—was asked about a man."
