• I said to Ahmad—once again—: "Are the ears part of the head?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Is there anything regarding this from the Prophet, peace be upon him?" He said: "I do not know [of any]." I said: "Is it narrated from Abu Umamah?" He said: "Yes, Hammad ibn Zayd narrated it." I said: "And Sulayman ibn Musa; is it mursal (attributed directly to the Prophet without a companion) from the Prophet, peace be upon him?" He said: "Yes."
• And I heard Ishaq saying: "What we choose for him is that when he washes his face, he should wash the inside of his ears along with his face, because of what Ali ibn Abi Talib described of the wudu' of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, being like that, and likewise Ibn Umar used to do. To the extent that Ibrahim said: 'As for me, I wash the front part of them along with my face, and I wipe the back part of them along with my head; for if they are part of the face, I have washed them, and if they are part of the head, I have wiped them.'"
190 - Ishaq narrated to us, he said: Yahya ibn Wadih narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad ibn Talhah ibn Yazid ibn Rukanah, from Ubaydullah al-Khawlani, from Ibn Abbas, from Ali ibn Abi Talib—may Allah be pleased with him—from the Prophet, peace be upon him, regarding the story of the wudu' of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and he mentioned washing the inside of the ears along with the face, and wiping their outside along with the head.
(1) This is how it appears in the original, and the appropriate reading is "zahiraha" (their outside).
