191 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Sulayman ibn Musa, [from 'Ata'], the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "The ears are from the head."
Chapter: Combing the Beard
• I said to Ahmad: "A man forgot to comb his beard?" He said: "I hope there is nothing [wrong/sinful] upon him; for nothing in this regard has been proven authentic; it is narrated therein but it is nothing [of established standing]." He said: "And the most authentic of them [the narrations] is [from] the hadith of 'Uthman, and they have indeed stated regarding it that it is from Humran, and they are inconsistent regarding it." I said: "What about the hadith of 'Ammar?" He said: "And that [is] also [the same]." And he was lenient regarding combing [the beard].
(1) This is how it appears in the original, and the hadith is well-known from the narration of Sulayman ibn Musa from the Prophet, peace be upon him, as a mursal report, without mentioning 'Ata'—this has preceded in the speech of Harb and Ahmad's agreement upon it (p. 129)—and al-Daraqutni has commented in al-'Ilal (13/321) on the narration of Sufyan, and he did not mention 'Ata' in it, so perhaps the correct view is its omission from the chain of transmission. (2) This is how it appears in the original, and the appropriate reading is "wa asahhuha" (and the most authentic of them). (3) This is how it appears in the original, and perhaps the correct view is the omission of "'an" (from).
١٩١ - حدثنا سَعيد بن مَنصور، قال: ثنا سُفيان، عن ابن جُرَيج، عن سُلَيمان بن موسَى، [عن عَطاء] (١)، قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «الأذنان من الرأس».
باب: تَخليلِ اللحيَة
• قلت لأحمد: رجلٌ نَسِي أن يُخَلِّل لِحيَته؟ قال: «أرجو ألَّا يكون عَلَيه شيء؛ فإنه لم يَصِحَّ في هذا حديثٌ، يُروَى فيه غَيرُ شيء». قال: «وأَصَحُّهما (٢): [عن] (٣) حَديث عُثمان، وَهُم قَد قالوا فيه: إنه عن حُمران، ويَضطَرِبُون فيه». قلت: فَحَديث عَمَّار؟ قال: «وَذَاك -أيضًا-». وسَهَّل في التَّخليل.
(١) كذا في الأصل، والحديث مشهور من رواية سليمان بن موسى، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم مرسلا، دون ذكر عطاء -وسبق هذا في كلام حرب وموافقة أحمد عليه (ص ١٢٩) -، وقد علق الدارقطني -في العلل (١٣/ ٣٢١) - رواية سفيان، فلم يذكر "عطاء" فيها، فلعل الصواب حذفه من الإسناد.(٢) كذا في الأصل، والوجه: "وأصَحُّها".(٣) كذا في الأصل، ولعل الصواب حذف "عن".
