• I heard Ishaq say: "These people made wudu' obligatory for one sleeping while lying on his side when sleep overcomes him in that state, yet they excused the one sleeping soundly while bowing (ruku') or prostrating (sujud). Yet these two states (bowing and prostrating) are more likely to result in the occurrence of a hadath (nullifier of ablution) than sleeping on one's side. Thus, they neither followed a narration nor adhered to qiyas (analogical deduction)."
232 - Abu 'Ali Muhammad ibn Mu'awiyah narrated to us, saying: Quza'ah ibn Suwayd narrated to us, from Maymun al-Khayyat, from Abu 'Iyad, from Hudhayfah, who said: "I was sleeping in the mosque when suddenly a man was behind me. I turned around and it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, does wudu' become obligatory upon me?' He said: 'No, not until you place your side (on the ground).'"
233 - Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Nafi', that 'Abd Allah [ibn 'Umar] used to say: "Whoever sleeps lying on his side, he must perform wudu', and whoever sleeps while sitting, there is no wudu' upon him."
234 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: 'Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Haywah ibn Shurayh, from Humayd ibn Ziyad, from Yazid ibn Qasit, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "There is no wudu' required for the one who sleeps while standing, nor for the one who sleeps while holding his knees with his arms (muhtabi), nor for the one who sleeps while prostrating."
