237 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: 'Umar ibn Damad narrated to us, saying: Shu'ayb ibn al-Habhab narrated to us, from Abu al-'Aliyah, who said: "A single immersion suffices the person in a state of janabah."

Chapter: How is the Ghusl (Ritual Bath) for Janabah performed?

• I heard Ishaq ibn Ibrahim say: "When one intends to perform ghusl for janabah, he begins by washing his private parts three times, and he washes whatever of his thigh was touched by the janabah. If he needs to perform istinja', he washes his posterior three times up to seven, until he cleanses it; he does not exceed that unless he has not cleansed it, in which case he adds more until he has cleansed it, because cleansing is mandatory. Then he rinses his mouth and inhales water into his nose, and washes his face and forearms as we described in the washing for wudu'. Then he takes water and pours it over his head three times, and over his body three times, and he follows the areas of the navel and the folds of the body until the water penetrates them. Then he steps aside and washes his feet thoroughly."

• I heard Abu Ya'qub—on another occasion—say: "If you intend to perform ghusl for janabah, pour water from the vessel over your hands and wash your palms three times. Then, pour with your right hand and wash your private parts with your left hand. Once you have washed your private parts, wipe your hand with dust or against a wall, then wash your palms. Then rinse your mouth three times, inhale water three times, wash your face three times, and wash your hands up to the elbows, three times each. Then wash your head three times, ensuring water reaches the roots of the hair and your beard, and wash your ears—their exteriors and interiors. Then pour water over your entire body, then step aside from your place and wash your feet." It was said: "Beneath every hair is a state of janabah, so wet the hair and cleanse the skin."
