And His saying: "sound (musallamah)" means: free from defects, according to the interpretation of Qatada. And His saying (Exalted is He): "having no patch (la shiyah fiha)" means: it has no blackness and no whiteness, according to the interpretation of Mujahid.
Muhammad said: The recitation is "la shiyah" (in the accusative case) as a negation. Al-washy (patching/variegated color) in the language means: mixing one color with another. You say: "washaitu al-thawb ashihi shiyatan wa wash-yan" (I dyed/variegated the garment, I dye it with a patch/pattern). Thus, the meaning is: there is no color in it that contradicts the majority of its color; and this is what Mujahid intended.
Al-dhalul (the trained/submissive one) among beasts is: the submissive one, and it is clearly docile (dhull). Docility is the opposite of difficulty. It is said: "This is a dhalul (docile) camel, clearly of dhill (docility)," with a kasra on the dhal.
Yahya said: And His saying (Exalted is He): "They said: Now you have brought the truth" means: you have clarified it. Sa'id narrated to me, from Qatada, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The people were only commanded to slaughter a cow of a minimum standard; but when they made it difficult for themselves, it was made difficult for them. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, had they not made exceptions, it would not have been clarified for them."
Yahya: And al-Mu'alla narrated to me, from al-A'mash, from al-Minhal ibn 'Amr, from Sa'id
