Muhammad said: "Ummiyyun" (the illiterate) is in the nominative case as the subject (mubtada'), and "minhum" (among them) is the predicate (khabar). It has also been said: the meaning is that there are illiterate ones established among them. And from their speech is: "Fika ummiyyah" (in you is illiteracy), meaning: ignorance. For this reason, the one who does not write is called "ummi" (illiterate).
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: ارْتَفع ((أُمِّيُّونَ)) بِالِابْتِدَاءِ، و ((مِنْهُم)) الْخَبَر. وَقد قِيلَ: الْمَعْنى اسْتَقر مِنْهُم أُمِّيُّونَ، وَمن كَلَامهم: فِيك أُميَّة: أَي: جَهَالَة؛ وَلذَلِك قِيلَ للَّذي لَا يكْتب: أُمِّي. [آيَة ٧٩ - ٨٠]
