Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 1 · Page 13490

Translation · EN

"Wretched is that for which they sold themselves" - meaning: wretched is that for which they sold their souls. "In that they disbelieve in what Allah has revealed, out of envy" - meaning: out of transgression, "that Allah should send down of His bounty upon whom He wills from among His servants."

Yahya said: Every occurrence of the word ((ishtaru)) (they purchased) in the Quran refers to purchasing, except for this verse, and every occurrence of the word ((sharau)) (they sold) in the Quran refers to selling.

Muhammad said: "out of envy" is a verbal noun (masdar). The meaning is: they disbelieved out of envy because Allah sent down [His] bounty upon His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. "So they have drawn upon themselves wrath upon wrath." Qatadah said: Allah was angry with them for their disbelief in the Gospel, and He was angry with them [for their disbelief] in the Quran. [Verses 91-93]
