"And when a messenger from Allah came to them," meaning: Muhammad, "a party of those who were given the Scripture cast the Scripture of Allah behind their backs," meaning: they do not act upon it, "as if they did not know," meaning: as if they do not possess [any covenant from Allah regarding it].
