"Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob?" meaning: You were not present on that day; with this, He addressed those of the Children of Israel who were around the Prophet, peace be upon him. "When he said to his sons, 'What will you worship'" meaning: what will you worship "after me? They said, 'We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac.'" Al-Hasan used to recite it: "We will worship your God and the God of your father Abraham and Ishmael," meaning: and the God of Ishmael and Isaac.
Muhammad said: Whoever recited it this way did so because he disliked considering the paternal uncle as a father.
The saying of the Exalted: "One God." Muhammad said: "One God" is in the accusative case, signifying: we worship your God in His state of oneness.
