"And We will surely test you with something of fear" - meaning: [fighting], according to the tafsir of al-Suddi. "And hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits." He means by the loss of lives: death. "But give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.'"
Muhammad said: His saying "with something," and He did not say "with things," is for the sake of conciseness. The meaning is: with something of fear, something of hunger, and something of the loss of wealth.
