And His saying: "Indeed we belong to Allah," meaning: We and our wealth belong to Allah, and we are His slaves; He does with us as He wills. This means: that is a reformation for us and a good. And the meaning of "and indeed to Him we will return" is: we are acknowledging [that we will be resurrected] and be given the reward for our belief and for our patience regarding that with which He has tested us.
Yahya: On the authority of Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abd Allah ibn Abi Khalifah, he said: "Umar was walking when the strap of his sandal broke, so he recited the Istirja' (saying 'Indeed we belong to Allah...'). A man said to him: 'What is the matter, O Commander of the Faithful?' He said: 'The strap of my sandal broke, and that distressed me, and everything that distresses you is a calamity.'"
Yahya: On the authority of al-Hasan, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Patience is at the first shock, and the eye, no one has control over it, [it is the manifestation of] the longing of a person for his brother."
وَقَوله: ﴿إِنَّا لله﴾ أَي: نَحْنُ وَأَمْوَالنَا لله، وَنحن عبيده يصنع بِنَا مَا يَشَاء؛ يَعْنِي: ذَلِكَ صَلَاح لَنَا وَخير، ومعني ﴿وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون﴾ أَي: نَحْنُ مقرون [بأننا نبعث] ونعطى الثَّوَاب عَلَى تصديقنا، وَالصَّبْر عَلَى مَا ابتلانا بِهِ.
يَحْيَى: عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي خَلِيفَةَ قَالَ: ((كَانَ عُمَرُ يَمْشِي فَانْقَطَعَ شِسْعَ نَعْلِهِ فَاسْتَرْجَعَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ: مَا لَكَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ قَالَ: انْقَطَعَ شِسْعُ نَعْلِي فَسَاءَنِي ذَلِكَ، وَكُلُّ مَا سَاءَكَ فَهُوَ مُصِيبَةٌ)).
يَحْيَى: عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ: ((الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى وَالْعين لَا يملكهَا (ل ٢٢) أَحَدٌ صَبَابَةَ الْمَرْءِ إِلَى أَخِيهِ)).
